If you’ve found this post, first and foremost I will say sorry as its not a subject we want to discus in the playground or at any time for that matter and often parents are at a loss and embarrassed not knowing what to do. But hopefully this will give you some hope of getting rid of these yukky things once and for all, with my tips and tricks of how to treat pinworms threadworms or as some call cottonworms– All the information I am sharing here has worked for our family over the years when the kids were little and may work for you.
I will not be adding any disgusting unnecessary images of the worms to my blog but feel free to google if you want, as there are plenty of grotesque pics of these mini beasts to see (but be warned not for the faint heated)
This is just a blog about what worked for my family and not medical advice so if you are going to treat yourself or someone, even with natural remedies its recommenced that you always ask a doctor first for advice.
What are Pin Worms?
Threadworms are tiny worms that can infect your gut.
Symptoms of threadworms include tiny worms in your poo and intense itching around your bottom (anus). You can get medicines to treat threadworms from a pharmacy. You should also wash things like bedding, towels and sleepwear to kill the eggs once you become aware of an infestation. You can catch threadworms if you touch something that someone with threadworms has touched and the tiny threadworm eggs get in your mouth.
Iv also heard they live in soil too so these MUD kitchens nurseries insist on letting the children play in are rife with them as the eggs and worms are un seen by the naked eye unless extreme close inspection. They can also manifest in play dough too. So its so important we instill good hand washing routines and keep nails short and scrubbed with nail brush after play.
You can spot worms in your poo. They look like pieces of white thread. You might also see them around your child’s bottom (anus). The worms usually come out at night while your child is sleeping. So this is the time to catch them.
You can get medicines to treat threadworms from a pharmacy. You should also wash things like bedding, towels and sleepwear to kill the eggs. But the medicines often just get rid of the worms in the body but because the parasites are in a cycle then the eggs already laid may have escaped as the come outside the body to lay eggs at night and hatch and crawl back inside restarting the never ending cycle. So what I realised is that yes take the medicine from the pharmacy and use the food grade Diatomaceous earth like a talc on a clean butt (as the powders harmless to humans if not inhaled is like shards of glass to the parasites.) So I found that doing these two things combined literally got rid of the worms in days rather than months or never ending in some cases.
Diatomaceous earth under a microscope is like shards of glass to a nasty parasite
What is Diatomaceous earth?
Diatomaceous earth, diatomite or kieselgur/kieselguhr is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder
We can only use Food Grade Diatomaceous earth on ourselves and inhaling it can be dangerous
I cant speak for all the other remedies such as garlic cloves, apple cider vinegar, carrots, pumpkin seeds, papaya seeds, coconut, sunflower seeds fermented foods, raw berries, and raw honey t name a few as Iv never needed to try them out after finding the remedy that works to get rid of the pin worms in my family. But.. I know that Diatomaceous earth FOOD GRADE powder applied like a talc plus over the counter combined as an option works for us.
I keep a jar like this full of Diatomaceous earth FOOD GRADE powder in my medicine cabinet
